In the early 90's my brother turned me on to African music. As I heard more
of it, my interest in the music grew. Pretty
soon I was scouring the music guides and listening to radio shows trying to
find out who was playing in town. I found myself emailing friends on a
weekly basis with the latest concert schedules and recommendations for CDs
to purchase (not all of whom really cared to know). Last year the great
Malathini, King of the Groaners, died in South Africa and I suddenly realized
that although African music was becoming known, it was still not recognized as well
as it should be. I started photographing the concerts I attended so that I
could document the musicians I had seen and redoubled my efforts to let people
know about the live shows.
People have told me that the African scene in LA in the 80s was more vibrant
than it is now, and that there has been a decline in audiences. I regret
having missed that, but am doing my part to revive the support of African
musicians. Rather than be a passive audience member I am trying to create
events that I would like to see and make them available to a wider audience
than before.
AfroPulse Productions is intended to bring you the latest concert information,
CDs, radio shows, Internet broadcasts, and interviews with the current great and
promising new African stars. In addition, I plan to hire and organize local
concerts featuring African musicians. Watch for us in 2001, because AfroPulse
concerts are going to be the ones that everyone talks about!
If you have any comments or questions about this site, the activities we do,
or anything else about the African scene, just let me know. I want this site
to be useful to as many people as possible. Any feedback you provide will
help me make this site serve your needs better.
