African Music Concerts Week of Aug 24 - Aug 31

Thu, Aug 28 Adaawe

An all woman band featuring drums is not very common, especially in Africa, but LA's own group of vocalists has among them several Africans and a passion by all for the rhythms of West Africa. Djembe and talking drum are featured, along with an acapella harmony that resembles Zap Mama.

Temple Bar 10:00PM $7
Fri-Sat, Aug 29-30 Isley Brothers

For 40 years these two brothers have been teaching us how to play Rock and R&B. See them in person with someone special for a romantic evening, that is once Damon Williams finishes making you laugh. Although all the performers are American through and through, the roots and inspiration of their work is straight from Africa.

Fri-Mon, Aug 29-Sep 1 African Marketplace

Every year the African Marketplace comes to Exposition Park for three weeks before Labor day. Come for the music, art, crafts, instruments, story tellers, clothes, food, petting zoo, carnival rides and much, much more! The festival grounds are packed with beautiful people so come on down and meet some new friends.

Exposition Park 10:00AM-9:00PM $6 Adults / $3 Senior & youths
Sat, Aug 30 Andre Manga

Formerly the musical director for Manu Dibango, now a producer and leader of his own Afro-Jazz band called Dumazz, Andre plays a furious electric bass. The group includes keyboards, drums, congas and lead guitar to produce a funky rocking sound to their Cameroonian style.

Club Narain, 13723 Fiji Way, MDR 9PM - Midnight $15
Sat, Aug 30 Prince Diabaté

The king of kora, a Guinean Jimmy Hendrix, Prince is all fingers on stage. He can play faster, harder and longer than anyone else, whether the kora is behind his head, upside down or being rapped like a drum for percussion between notes. You can't miss his long locks, sweet smile and shiny red instrument. With the backing of an equally impressive band you will dance until the sun sets.

San Juan Capistrano 7 & 9PM $10 each show
Sun, Aug 31 DJ Lorenzo

Normally Long Beach is the hotspot for reggae, but over the Labor Day Weekend, the Lorenzo will invade for the African Connection Jam! Featuring the music of West Africa with soukous and roots, in addition to R&B, dancehall and reggae.

Golden Sails Hotel 6285 E Pacific Coast Hwy, Long Beach 9PM - 2AM $??
