African Music Concerts Week of Sep 7 - Sep 13

Sun, Sep 7 Belizean Festival in the Park

The Belizean Association conducts their annual celebration including music, arts and crafts, plus Caribbean food. Come out and meet all the Garifuna!

Thu, Sep 11 Jerri Jheto

Shake 'n bake a little Nigerian highlife, with a touch of gospel bass and an spunky reggae tune and you'll have the start of Jerri's recipe. But like any good chef, only he has the secret ingredients and technique to finish off the serving just right. Come on down and get it while its still smokin' hot!

Temple Bar 10:00PM $7
Fri, Sep 12 Abdullah Ibrahim

Jazz piano is not the first thing to cross your mind when someone mentions a musician from South Africa, but "Dollar Brand" as his trio was called, is not your ordinary musician. In 1965 he played the Newport Jazz Festival and in 1966 substituted as bandleader for Duke Ellington in 5 cities -- and that was when his career was just getting started. He has played with many of the jazz best but he is not as well known by the general public. He rarely comes to Los Angeles, so try to get out and pay hommage to his sound.

Sat, Sep 13 Rocky Dawuni

Rocky presents roots reggae Ghanaian style and his new cool AfroBeat sound at the 7th Annual Doheny Days World Music Festival at Dana Point. Saturday is the day to go because you will also get to hear Jimmy Cliff, Andrew Tosh and Yellowman plus several more bands. Now that is a reggae line up! The show continues on Sunday with entirely different reggae bands.

Doheny State Beach, 25300 Dana Point Harbor Drive 11:30AM-9:15PM $32-100
