Recurring African Events February 2004
Feb 1 - Mar 28
TopDog / UnderDog
The Mark Taper Forum downtown is staging this 2002 Pulitzer Winning play written by Suzan-Lori Parks who has won the MacArthur Award. She is the first African-American woman to win a Pulitzer for drama. Last year it was a big hit on Broadway. Two brothers, Lincoln and Booth, struggle with each other's needs for love and power. They pursue the street game of cons -- three-card monte, but learn life's lessons and hopes in the process. It is a study of what it means to be brothers and to be family. Mention code 3153 to get tickets for $25 through Feb 19.
Feb 5 - Feb 16
Pan African Film Festival (PAFF)
In celebration of Black History Month, Los Angeles hosts PAFF every February at the Magic Johnson Theatres and other venues. This is the largest African Film Festival in the United States, so be supportive -- go out and see a movie or two. Most of these movies will never be shown in town at any venue so the festival is your only chance to see the talent and creativity that Hollywood and the film industry are ignoring.
