Sun, Feb 8 Perú Negro

Many generations ago some of the African slaves destined for the New World ended up on the west coast of South America in Peru. They assimilated into the culture, but like everywhere else in the world they kept their own unique rhythm and musical culture blending it with the local tastes. In Peru this resulted in at least one international hit that made Celia Cruz famous (Toro Mata). The music was brought to the American ears when David Byrne "discovered" the sound and produced, as well as performed on, the CD The Soul of Black Peru.

Perú Negro are the cultural ambassadors of the African music scene in Peru. They were here last year at UCLA and received such a warm welcome that they came back immediately. If you know anyone from Peru, they were probably at last year's performance as the hall was filled with native speakers and dancers. Come out and hear for yourself the unique sound of these Afro-Peruvian legends.

UCLA Royce Hall 7:00PM $20-40
Mon, Feb 9 / Wed, Feb 11 Erykah Badu

Creativity, soul and rhyme complement each other when Erykah takes the stage. She has created a new sound all her own that is a combination of everything funky and poetic in the R&B world. Don't ask questions, just find a way to get tickets. At Universal, she will be performing with The Roots.

Anaheim Grove / Universal Amphitheatre 8:00PM $47.50-52.50 / $35-55
Fri, Feb 13 Ricardo Lemvo

Back at his main stage, Ricardo lights up the dance floor with a smooth voice and the lightning fingers of Huit Kilos on guitar. Polish your salsa shoes but bring some of the Congolese Rumba steps to hang with the pros.
