African Music Concerts Week of Feb 15 - Feb 21

Tue, Feb 17 - Sun, Feb 22 Gino Sitson Quartet

I saw Gino perform in a little below ground bar in Manhattan. He had a bass, piano, drums and sax accompanying him while he sang and imitated other instruments using his voice. The languages were Cameroonian, but the music could be easily understood. Jazz. Freestyle. Personal.

Gino's CD Song Zin' was listed on LA Times 2002 top ten list. It features not only his singing and soundmaking, but also sounds from his cheeks, his hands and other forms of self-instrumentation.

The National Ensemble of Guinea features dance, music, choreography, acrobatics, comedy, singing, story-telling and much more. They have been touring since the 50's, replenishing the group with fresh talent every year when they return to Guinea. They are probably the most prolific touring African group. This year their performance features 35 members and celebrates 50 years of performances.
