African Music Concerts Week of Jul 11 - Jul 17
Sun, Jul 11
Oumou Sangare
Malian Wassoulou singer Oumou joins Tracy Chapman for some female stage power. Listen to the message these divas bring. They have insight, vision and talent. Of the two, I would give Oumou the nod for most powerful and pure voice, but English speakers will find Tracy's lyrics easier to follow and more compelling because of the shared cultural background. Oumou became a superstar by challenging the status quo attitudes about female subservience in Mali, causing quite a debate about traditions and modern views of equality and rights -- selling hundreds of thousands of CDs in the process.
Wed, Jul 14
Youssou N'Dour
Youssou N'Dour is one of the most famous African musicians in the West because of his Grammy nominations and influence on performers such as Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel. This time he is touring with his Senegalese band Super Étoile de Dakar. They specialize in using the traditional instruments of Senegal, but blend in the modern sounds of Dakar featured in the popular mbalax style and the pure, peircing voice of Youssou. Watch for some local Senegalese hopping on stage to show their unique dance style. The audience always finds this music irresistable. This show will be one of the highlights of the year, don't miss it! Avoid the price gouging by Ticket Master. Get your tickets at Aron's Records.
Thu, Jul 15
Hamza El Din
Nubian music of Africa meets European chamber music when the cellist for Kronos Quartet teams up with the master of the oud. Hamza is the spokesperson for a culture that has been displaced, but his music speaks loud enough for the entire population. The blending of styles is a music lovers paradise with its nuanced tones. Come be mesmerized and feel the spirit of their sound.
