African Music Concerts Week of Aug 8 - Aug 14
Sun, Aug 8
Kékélé
Performing for their first time in Los Angeles, the veterans of Congolese Rumba are together again. This time the focus for Syran Mbenza, Nyboma and Wuta Mayi (of Quatre Étoiles in a past life) is acoustic improvements on their 80's signature style. Ruled by guitars, soaring voices and furious dance steps, the group is rounded out with other famous artists including guitarist Rigo Star and major solo singing sensations of a similar era. This is an afternoon concert for the whole family!
Thu, Aug 12
Jaojoby
The Malagasy dance sounds of one of the best known practictioners of salegy music hits the stage as part of the free Sunset Concert series at the Skirball. The outdoor air near the ocean is exhilirating in the summer when the crowd is on their feet dancing. This is the US debut for Jaojoby, but they are no newcomers. They have been playing this sound since the early 70's. Come out if you like Congolese Rumba because that is one of the influences, and being from the West Coast of Madagascar, Jaojoby definitely has an African bias in his music. |
