African Music Concerts Week of May 1 - May 7

Sat, May 7 Majek Fashek

Majek Fashek has a new CD entitled "" featuring his band the Prisoners of Conscience. This CD represents his reentry into the musical world after an absence of nearly a decade. Nicknamed "The Rainmaker" for his prophetic song which broke a year-long Nigerian drought, Fashek was a superstar in his homeland in the 1980s. "Free Nelson Mandela" solidified his hold on audiences when its premise came true soon after the song was being performed.

During the late 80s and early 90s he came to the United States, touring with Tracy Chapman but then disappeared from the international music stage. He is restarting his career with this release. Since he lives in the South Bay area, the locals get an early glimpse at his new work. The Hermosa show is being billed as a "Family & Friends" get together prior to his national tour later in May. Catch him in this small venue before you find out that you can't get tickets at one of the big venues when he comes back!
