African Music Concerts Week of Jul 3 - Jul 9

Wed, Jul 6 - Sat, Jul 9 The stageplay "Yellowman"

Come out to see the Pulitzer nominated play about Black-on-Black discrimination in the Gullah-Geechee culture of South Carolina's Sea Islands. The play investigates the racism that favors lighter skinned individuals over their more African looking neighbors. Love, alcohol, generational chasms and other complexities of everyday life are intricately wound into a heart-wrenching story. Highly recommended. This show began in February and has been doing so well that it is in its final extension through August 28!

The Fountain Theatre 8PM; 2PM Sunday $25
Fri, Jul 8 Khaled

It's been a few years since Khaled played in Los Angeles. The "King of Raï" is one of the best in the world at blending musical styles. His songs are truly global world music, melding reggae, blues, funk, Arabic and every other kind of music he has ever heard. The music is infectious dance music, so expect lots of his followers on their feet for this show. Another of the great downtown free Grand Performances concerts!
