African Music Concerts Monthly Summary for 2006 Celebrate the 3rd year anniversary of Afro Funké hosted by Rocky Dawuni, Ashley Maher performs with Andre Manga and Aziz Faye the next night, and then head over to the Vic a week later for Andre Manga playing with his own band. The summer concerts start off with an appearance by Baaba Maal at both the Playboy Jazz Festival and a local venue, followed by Amadou et Miriam a week later and blues singer Eric Bibb the same night for those in the south. The final show of the month is the first appearance of Viviane N'Dour in Los Angeles. Grand Performances kicks off with music from Cape Verde and Haiti, Kékélé of Congo, and Daara J from Senegal. The summer scene at other venues continues with ThongJieng from Sudan and MC Rai unfortunately scheduled the same night, Daby Touré of Mauritania, a documentary film one night and a live performance the next by The Refugee All Stars of Sierra Leone, while across town Ladysmith Black Mambazo is playing at the Ford.
The summer concerts start to wind up with some of their biggest stars including Salif Keita and Mamadou Diabate, both from Mali, and two Cameroonians are back on the scene: Titus Jimmy Fotso and Andre Manga's Dumazz. The African series at Hollywood and Highland continues with classical Egyptian music, Naby Camara of Guinea and Kow Kanda from Sierra Leone. Nee Sackey of Ghana makes an appearance with his band Native Vibe. Local musicians Masanga Marimba Ensemble play traditional thumb organs and Richard Bona returns. Not planned yet. Not planned yet.
