Prince Diabaté is often called "the Jimi Hendrix of the kora". His appearance on West African Wednesdays for July will celebrate the release of his CD "New Life". The CD moves his music into a new realm of fusion, veering sharply from the traditional griot music that kora players are expected to perform.

The evening will consist of two sets of music. The first will be traditional kora music played during dinner. It is acoustic and rhythmic music that demonstrates the story-telling technique that griots use in their songs. After dinner, Diabaté will turn up the heat with his new kora-fusion sound to get everyone on the dance floor. His quick fingers and mastery of the instrument are what allow him to blaze a new trail for traditional kora music and bring it into the age of electrified world music.
