"Africa's Cry" is Najite's latest release which came out last fall. This is an Afrobeat sound with a bit more jazz and a bit less beat. It leans more towards the earlier Highlife Jazz sound that Fela did rather than the later Afrobeat sound of Africa 70. Ticket locations:

Atlas Supper Club Najite was a student of Fela Kuti's in Lagos, Nigeria starting in 1972. He now leads a 15-piece Afrobeat band that includes other Nigerians such as Jerri Jheto on bass, as well as former members of the famous old Ghanaian highlife band called the Uhuru Dance Band. The sounds that Najite has created are more in the vein of the old Highlife Jazz that predates Afrobeat. The Ogun Prophecy was created in 1984 and debuted at the Los Angeles Olympics. Their music is influenced not only by the sounds direct from Africa, but also American jazz, blues, and funk. DJ Carlos Nino will be spinning African dance grooves between sets and after the second set. Carlos hosts the KPFK show Spaceways at 10:00pm on Sundays. Back to the Concert Index |
