   CD Cover: Soul Makassar

"Soul Makassar" is the result of a trip to Sulawesi that the leader of Tarika, Hanitra Rasoanaivo, undertook to examine the cultural roots of Madagascar. She came back with a treasure-trove of similarities, in foods, music, and rituals, and transformed them into the songs that make up this release.

Tarika is one of the only bands from Madagascar that tours internationally. They are not from West Africa, but we are flexible in our approach to West African Wednesdays, allowing for any performers from throughout the continent of Africa including the offshore islands like Madagascar.

The music of Tarika is well known in Madagascar and consists of the current dance music performed on traditional instruments. Their last album revived some of the old dance tunes of the 70s and rode to the top of the charts. The new album is also a chart-topper, but is very different in its blending of Indonesian and Malagasy sounds.

The evening will consist of two sets of music starting at 9:30. The doors will not open until 9:00 because of an earlier show that is taking place the same night at the Atlas Supper Club. It will be a late night with plenty of dancing, so rest up on Tuesday!
