The Knitting Factory was well known in NYC as an outlet for avant garde
music acts, as well as their own CDs. The new branch in Hollywood
started in 2001 and is still building a following. There is a trend toward
world music, although it is mostly in the arena of DJs emulating dance
clubs in other parts of the world, but they may get a few African acts
as they settle into a more well-known roster.
Thanks to the stage being raised up, a great sound system, and
a professional lighting show, the Knitting Factory is a good place
to see a show. The second floor balcony gets obstructed views and
the sound man may be between you and the stage, while the bottom floor
is a wide open dance area similar to
The Conga Room
although much smaller. If you get tired of watching the main act you
can wander out to the bar area where there are free Internet terminals
set up for browsing.
