West African Wednesdays (WAW)
June
The June WAW show has been modified with a new line up. Rocky
Dawuni will not be performing on June 27. Instead we will open
the night with Khaley Nguewel, a troupe of Senegalese drummers
and dancers. There are 4 sabar and djembe drummers led by Aziz
Faye who will perform on stage. Dancers will be on the floor
in front of the stage so that they have room to execute their
wild aerial twists in accompaniment to the beat. The dance
troupe performs from 8:30-9:30.
After a short break, Dodo Munoko and La Rumba Band will take
the stage to play their old style Congolese rumba and soukous.
Dodo continues the technique he learned while singing with
Tabu Ley Rochereau. He will perform 2 sets starting at 10:00
with Nene Tchacou on guitar. If you like to dance, you must
already know that Dodo has the best soukous band in town!
The performance will be at the Atlas Supper Club, 3760 Wilshire
Blvd (at Western), next door to the Wiltern theatre. Tickets
are $12 in advance, $15 at the door and can be ordered from the
AfroPulse website (http://www.afropulse.com/waw/).
You can buy tickets at the following locations:
Aron's Records*, 1150 North Highland, Hollywood (323) 469-4700

Fidelity Afrobeat
Fidelity Afrobeat is playing tonight, Wed June 20 at the Atlas
Supper Club starting at 11:00pm. They are playing late because
we were able to arrange for Joachim Cooder's Radio Bemba to
open for them at 9:00pm. This is going to be one hot show!
The nortena sound and latin horns of Cuba warm up the dance
floor and the deep rumbling funk of Fidelity will take the
sound home to the Nigerian motherland. $10 at the door lets
you see both bands. Expect a fun and energetic crowd.

Sunday Jam Sessions
The first two jam sessions produced an incredible jazz sound
with Josman Mbella hosting the events. His scatting and
percussions was enhanced by Marcel Adjibi on congas, Paul
Tchounga on drums, Mick Linden on bass, Marcel Camargo on
lead guitar, and Kim Hansen on keyboard. They sounded so
well together that the group should consider forming a
regular band. Their style and sound was unmistakably unique
with a jazzy African flair.
Atlas booked a series of private events, and with the impending
Toure Toure concert on Sunday, July 8, the jam sessions will
be on hold for a while. Stay tuned for more information.
