Wintertime Blues
Every year at this time it is difficult to find good African
music. This year is a double-whammy because of the closing
of the only DJ club, Zanzibar West. Yes, it's official. The
final night will be tonight, Dec. 7, due to a change of owners
at the location that has been hosting the club in Inglewood.
We can only hope that they will be back at a new location, but
if you want to catch the last dance, be there tonight. I'll
definitely be going!

Your best bet this month is to go to the Temple Bar and see
either Aziz with his Senegalese sabar drumming and dancing,
or Baidley Cissoko and Boujoubombastic. If you want to venture
out of town, try some Senegalese hip-hop in San Bernadino
(although there will be local rap and hip-hop as well, not just
an African night) on the 15th. Ricardo Lemvo gets 2002 started
at the Conga Room on New Year's Eve (or as they call it in
Trinidad, Old Year's Night).

Last month I prematurely announced the settlement of the dispute
at Pacifica Network. Apparently discussions fell apart and the
parties are still trying to work out their differences. For the
latest news on that front, check out the Save Pacifica website
at http://www.savepacifica.net/ or the official Pacifica website
at http://www.pacifica.org/ I'm not trying to choose sides,
I just wanted to correct my mistake last month.

Keep your ear to the scene and let me know about any new sounds
around town!
