African Marketplace
The 17th annual African Marketplace runs through Monday this
coming weekend. It has moved from Rancho La Cienega Park to a
spot adjacent to USC in Exposition Park. On Saturday afternoon
from 3:00-5:00 DJ Nnamdi of Radio Afrodicia on KPFK 90.7 will be
broadcasting live. The radio show will feature the music of
Awilo Longomba (soukous) who will be coming to town in October,
Mokassa from Petit Paye and the ever popular Highlife. If you
go to the African Stage you can see dancers performing to the
music plus a fashion show. CDs, clothes and art are available
at the show as happens every year. Watch for a big crowd, this
one always has a strong draw!

Antibalas
Friday, September 6 marks the return of the large Afrobeat band
Antibalas. They will be performing at the El Rey Theater in a
show that is sponsored by Temple Bar and KCRW 89.9. Last time
they were in town they had 15 musicians to give a full sound of
horns. Their music is a loose, jazzy version of Afrobeat and
features former members of the Daktaris and is led by a trainee
of Fela Kuti.
The most novel thing about their show is that they also emulate
the Grateful Dead. You are allowed to photograph, videotape, or
record their live shows as long as you don't use the results for
commercial purposes. Trade them with friends, share them with
your family. This is a can't miss show for September! There
is a chance this one might sell out, so get your tickets early.

Zimbabwean Art
The heightened security at US Customs has created an unfortunate
incident for some women from Zimbabwe. They were out here for
an African Art show in Las Vegas. They shipped their art from
back home in a 20 foot container and flew out to meet it. Bad
timing meant they missed the sales opportunity in Vegas and now
have to try to sell as much as possible at a discount here in
Los Angeles. From the flyer:
Fine African Art from Zimbabwe
Selling at extreme discounts!
- Shona sculptures (all sizes) made from stone, wood
- Colorful fabrics, Batiks
- Wooden utensils
- Hand-knitted and woven items
- Basketry
- Lots, lots more
These 4 women are selling their art for pennies on the dollar
in the hopes of preventing a total loss. Entire contents of a
20 foot container must sell by Sept 1st! Cash only - Bartering
Stop by anytime 9AM - 7PM at 2775 Cahuenga West at the Hollywood
Bungalow (Next to and north of the Hollywood Bowl) or contact
Ennet Chiradza (323) 969-9155
If you have a desire for authentic works from Zimbabwe, drop by
and see if there is something for you. Help out these ladies
as they will have a long flight back home without sales. This
is a good opportunity to add to your collection, and a lucky tip
only for readers of the AfroPulse Newsletter!

I am running behind this month and will update the calendar
shortly. Watch for a show by Eugene de Coque on Sunday, Sept 1
and stay tuned for Awilo Longomba coming in October direct from
Africa.
