Awilo Longomba
Right now Awilo is one of the biggest stars in Africa, playing
regularly to stadium sized crowds in Nigeria. He was recently
chosen to open the All Africa Games next year in Nigeria. And
he has never been to the US. This month we are treated to some
live action modern soukous from Awilo at the Culver City
Veterans Auditorium on Saturday October 26. Get your dancing
shoes ready and be there early because the city closes it down
by 12:30AM! $30 in advance, $35 at the door.

Temple Bar
Temple Bar seems to be on a roll now. This month they have
several African shows including a musician from Niger making
his first appearance in LA!
Rocky Dawuni just played on October 3, while the regulars Khaley
Nguewel (sabar drums of Senegal) and Boujoubumbastic (kora and
bass) will be playing Thursday, October 10 and Thursday October
24 respectively. Gyedu-Blay Ambolley has started showing up at
the venue to perform his Ghanaian Highlife Jazz -- this week he
will play on Friday night. Finally on Sunday, Oct 20 special
guests Mamar Kassey direct from Niger will make their first LA
appearance. They have a new CD out on World Village called
"Alatoumi." I haven't heard them before, but I plan to see for
myself what they have to offer.
For another local band check out Jimmy Titus Fotso with special
guest George Clinton at the Century Club on Sunday, Oct 13.
Jimmy is celebrating with a CD release party.

Salif Keita
To promote his new CD "Moffou", Salif Keita has embarked on a
cross-continent tour. His first appearance in this area will
be at UC Riverside on October 24. The big event will be at
UCLA's Royce Hall on Saturday, November 2 at 8:00PM. If you
haven't gotten your tickets yet, you better order now or be
sure to bring a pair of binoculars!
Salif is the golden voiced master of Mali who got his start with
the famed Super Rail Band. He is descended from royalty, so it
is unusual that he has taken up the art form of the Griots. He
was forbidden to pursue music but chose to follow his heart
and talents. He has one of the most powerful voices this side
of Pavrotti.

Normally this time of year is a bit quiet in terms of African
music, but the next few weeks offer an abundance of sounds. Be
sure to get out and support the musicians so that they will come
back often.
