Les Nubians
I've been remiss in maintaining the calendar this month with
other activities taking all my time. I didn't even notice it
but the show at the El Rey with Les Nubians last month was
postponed and will now take place on Tuesday, March 18. Sorry
for the late notice.
These two sisters bring an amalgum of Cameroonian, Parisian and
good old American R&B soul to the stage. This is the modern
Afro-European eclectic international sound, beautiful voices
and beautiful women.

Getty Series
The Getty has been doing an international music series, which
just ended last weekend. I was able to sneak a seat at the
packed Maria de Barros debut. She is from Cape Verde and is
the goddaughter of Cesaria Evora. Whereas Cesaria is the queen
of the morna, a slow yearning type of ballad, Maria is the queen
of the coladeira, a dance music similar to the Colombia cumbia.
The show was quite entertaining, the audience enthusiastic and
the music infectious. Watch for her CD release party in LA
sometime in June. She is now a local, so we may get to see her
on a regular basis.
There is another show at the Getty this Saturday, March 22 at
8:00PM that is not part of that series. It features Hamza el
Din, a Sudanese musician who plays Islamic Nubian and Arabic
music. He is a master of the oud and tar and plays Sufi-inspired
rhythms.

There really isn't much of anything happening around town. I
hope the summer brings more music, because there is precious
little right now. Youssou N'Dour cancelled his American tour
because he did not support the American government's war push.
Nina Simone had to cancel her show due to illness; Dee Dee
Bridgewater also had a cancellation.
I had to settle for tickets to Stomp! for the beginning of April.
It's not African, but if you listen to the beats you can place
their roots in many different nations of the African diaspora.
Checkout the Soweta Street Beat if you get a chance. It is in
Pasadena at Caltech on April 4.
