Service Disruption

It seems that once every 6 months the network provider decides
things have been running too smoothly. Once again they have
decided to change the service, meaning the servers will be
inaccessible for a few days probably starting May 7. I have
been having a little trouble with my machines, as well as an
overloaded schedule so I wasn't able to send out the March /
April newsletter. You can see it on the website, but it is a
bit late to make the concerts I mentioned.

Lágbájá

The House of Blues has a great concert scheduled for the evening
of Wednesday, May 7. Direct from Nigeria comes the masked music
of Lágbájá. Referred to as the faceless voice for the voiceless
faces, he sings the truth of the common man. Whether telling
politicians to answer with a "Simple Yes or No" or for people to
not spread rumors, his messages are lively, deep and clear.

Don't call it AfroBeat, if you must name it say "Koloruko", but
even still you will hear the voice of Fela, the swing of King
Sunny, the beat of the Yoruba drums and many other sounds. This
is the sound of a true professional who is blending his own mix
and creating the next big thing from Africa.

For a special deal, visit Afrodicia for a flyer that allows
you to buy 2 tickets for the price of 1 at the box office.

May African Blitz

Temple Bar is featuring African music every Friday during the
month of May. Out of the doldrums comes a great month of music.
Prince Diabaté (Malian kora), Rhian Benson (R&B from
Ghana), Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited (Zimbabwe),
Hassan Hakmoun (Moroccan Gnawa) and Najite & the Ogun Prophecy
(Nigerian AfroBeat). I was hoping to check out the promisingly
named AfroBeat Down at Fais Do-Do on Wednesday, May 15 but I will
be in NY that week. At least I will get to hear some Caribbean
music (Andy Narell at SOB's) and an amazing Cameroonian Jazz
singer -- Gino Sitson at the Zinc Bar!

Stay tuned next month to read an exclusive interview with a new
diva from Senegal named Fania. She lived in LA for four years,
but will be returning as a French-based performer to play Fais
Do-Do in June.
