A double helping of quadrophonic guitars is in star for Southern California when the classic old Guinean band performs in San Juan Capistrano and then for the African Village Festival at the Ford Amphitheatre. The first show is Saturday, July 24 and the second is Sunday, July 25. The band is fronted by Sekou "Diamond Fingers" Diabaté, renowned for his guitar work. He will be shoulder-to-shoulder with three other guitarists, and backed by some of the finest vocalists Guinea has to offer. Also check out Forè-Foté if you are a fan of Guinean drummers. http://www.afropulse.com/music/concerts/2004-07-w4.html http://www.afropulse.com/music/concerts/2004-07-w5.html
AfroBeat month is upon us with the August celebration of Fela Kuti day. First, come out to the El Rey Theatre for the return of the Brooklyn-based masters, the most well known American AfroBeat band, Antibalas on Thursday, July 29. This is a hard night, because you'll have to rush from the Santa Monica Pier where Excentric Sound System is playing, to get to the El Rey in time for Antibalas. In August, the funk continues at the Temple Bar. Najite & the Olokun Prophecy will take the stage on Aug 2. Naji was trained by Fela in the early 70's. Then on Aug 19, the local band AfroBeat Down will perform. http://www.afropulse.com/music/concerts/2004-07-w5.html http://www.afropulse.com/music/concerts/2004-08-w1.html http://www.afropulse.com/music/concerts/2004-08-w3.html The great new sound from Congo is as old as the men performing. Several of the original Quatre Étoiles members joined with the best rumba vocalists of the last 30 years to create an acoustic version of the old soukous sound. Their first album together was highly praised. Proving they were no flash in the pan, a second album is out now with more critical acclaim. Catch them in San Juan on Aug 7 or at California Plaza on the afternoon of Aug 8. http://www.afropulse.com/music/concerts/2004-08-w1.html http://www.afropulse.com/music/concerts/2004-08-w2.html The King of Zoblazo displays his dance style straight from Côte D'Ivoire. The annual Independence Day celebration for his countrymen is the excuse for his LA debut. Meiway has now made his 8th CD delving into the depths of this style. Get ready to dance, because if anyone will make you dance, the Ivorians are the best at it! http://www.afropulse.com/music/concerts/2004-08-w1.html Another band that is new to Los Angeles performs at the Skirball on August 12. Coming all the way from Madagascar, Jaojoby plays the style of music called salegy. This is a more African slant on traditional Malagasy music. Fortunately, the outdoor area at this venue is perfect for dancing. http://www.afropulse.com/music/concerts/2004-08-w1.html Summer is in full swing and this appears to be the most active month of the year. With all the major stars appearing, you need to get out and bring your family for some dance exercise in the sun. jay |
