Downed Servers

A couple weeks ago as I was catching a plane to NYC, the power went out. I was not able to stick around until it came back on so my servers were down for 10 days or so. Karmic retribution for my harsh comments about others' servers last month.

Normally I love irony...

The servers are back now. If you didn't get a chance to visit the survey questionnaire, please do so. And learn a lesson from me -- don't stomp around in a tizzy complaining, you may just wake a sleeping giant that will stomp around also. As ye sow, shall ye reap.

Afro Funke

I've been meaning to go to this weekly boogie ritual for months now, but I've never found the time on a Thursday night. I even considered it last week and now regret I didn't act. The Zap Mama record release party turned into an impromptu jam session with Marie Daulne and two of her crew plus Stevie Wonder on the stage and grooving to the vibe. That's what I love about LA, you never know who will show up and what they will do. Only here can you experience such music up close and personal.

Every Thursday, $5, Zanzibar, Arizona & 5th St, Santa Monica

AfroBeat

Once again the funky sound of Antibalas reverberates through the night in Los Angeles. Two nights, Sept 30 and Oct 1.

"Nothing But the Truth"

South African Playwright and Actor John Kani stars in his own production at Mark Taper Forum from Sept 18 to Nov 7. This show studies the complexities that arise when blacks returning from abroad to post-apartheid Africa meet up with their countrymen who stayed home and risked their lives to change the country. He is a winner of a Tony Award for Best Actor. Discount tickets are available through Oct 3 with information from our website.

Les Percussions de Guinee

Caltech auditorium is not well known for African music. It has a nice stage with reasonable sound and is a great place to take the family. This ensemble from Guinea will demonstrate that the men are not the only ones who know how to play the djembe drums.

Eva Allyón

The Afro-Peruvian sound of the Lando comes to life when this diva performs at Royce Hall. She has produced 20 albums in the genre, so she knows what she is doing. Her debut here will be on Sun, Oct 10.

I will soon be off to Paris for a week, so if you know of any events to catch, drop me a line.
