Correction on Summer Concerts

After doing a little research, I discovered the summer concert scene is not as bleak as I originally thought. There are some powerhouse groups, some interesting first time visits and the local standbys. Check out the annual calendar, at least June and July are current now, but links on August and later will not be updated for a week or so.

Warning: get ready early for July. It is jam-packed. The first week of the month requires advance planning so you don't end up at the wrong show.

AfroFunké

I got so far behind I didn't realize the date was already here. Last night Rocky Dawuni celebrated 3 years hosting this funky Thursday gathering of DJs, African sounds, warm souls and a trendy environment for just hanging out.

It runs weekly, so be sure to check it out.

Viviane N'Dour

This will be the first time Los Angeles performance of Youssou's sister-in-law. She has half a dozen CDs under her belt now and a following back home and in London. She will introduce her blend of R&B, mbalax and hip-hop at the end of June.

July Shows

Plan ahead. Probably the greatest evenings this entire year will be back-to-back at the Skirball. First the award-winning documentary, then the live band, featuring the Refugee All Stars of Sierra Leone. Earlier in the month they will also present the Lost Boys of Sudan.

Check out the other shows in July because some are competing on the same night.

I am limited in how many shows I can attend, but the outdoor concerts are great for the whole family. Hopefully, I am fully caught up and can get the July issue out a week before the month actually starts!
