Afropulse Concert News
Volume 7 Issue 1
Other Newsletters
It's been a year and a half since I last sent a newsletter or updated the calendar. I've been quite busy with other things, and haven't been participating in the African music scene at all. I still won't be able to go to many concerts, but I hope to start keeping the calendar more current. The music in LA now seems primarily at the big events: UCLA and the summer outdoor concerts. Afrofunke is still running with a global selection of DJ beats and Temple Bar does an occasional African show, but the options seem much more limited than they used to be. Hopefully, I can augment the site with film, food and music download options. I am in the process of redesigning the layout of the website, so bear with me as individual pages are updated. It will take some time before the consistency across the whole website has returned, however, the new formats should lead to a better experience accessing and understanding the information. Please send me email if you have any comments or issues with the new format. All reports below are on a single calendar page for the whole month of March. There no longer are enough concerts to warrant a page per week. The summary of the year is on the homepage and each month's page can be accessed from there. Also, I try to give shortcuts to the performers that will be playing in the near future. The "Queen of Landó" will be performing at the Disney Music Hall. The acoustics of the facility make it the perfect location for the subtle melodies of Afro-Peruvian music. Angelique is an Afropop star from Benin. She has relocated to Brooklyn and has since attempted cross over on the charts to mainstream music. She is still thankfully true to her African roots but has managed to attract a lot of famous stars and fans to her unique style. In a return engagement at UCLA's Royce Hall, Peru Negro reprises their role as Peru's cultural ambassadors of Afro- Peruvian music. |
